"The Alex and Betty Schoenbaum Science, Educational,
Cultural and Sports Campus "
On September 11th 2011, our congregation was treated to a wonderful audio-visual presentation in our new Social Hall celebrating the official opening of the Alex and Betty Schoenbaum Science, Educational, Cultural and Sports Campus in Kiryat Yam, Israel.
This new high-tech educational and sports campus forms the hub of an urban educational system for the use of everyone from elementary school pupils to senior citizens in and around the Israeli coastal city. Kiryat Yam is a largely blue-collar community of 45,000 – including many Russian and Ethiopian immigrants – where the average income is about 25 per cent lower than the national average.
The campus boasts a state-of-the-art science center, science park, planetarium, marine observatory, Ethiopian heritage center, athletics track and aquatic sports center. The redevelopment of this brownfield site in the center of this seaside city went hand in hand with the extensive renovation of the neighbouring Rodman High School made possible by the generosity of our beloved friend and congregant Betty Schoenbaum and the Schoenbaum Family Foundation. It integrates values, culture, science and knowledge in a unique way and has completely transformed the area.
This is a dream come true for the resident of the State of Israel and in that particular area. Many of the school's students come from such poor backgrounds that they prefer to stay in school after hours and take advantage of its relative comfort. The library serves as an area where the children can spend that extra time and in the process benefit from the resources available.
In case you missed it or would like to enjoy it again, here is the video available on the web for the first time:
