Join us this Tuesday for our weekly Torah Class, now in our Social Hall.  We've been having great discussions around the Torah lately and this week will be no exception.  Join us as Moses continues to say his farewells to the Jewish people.  He reminds them of that momentous occasion at Mt. Sinai where he gave them the Ten Commandments and where he...wait a minute  !...these Ten Commandments are not the same as the ones  in the book of Exodus.  What's going on here ?  You'll find out this week!  Don't miss our Torah  class ... this Tuesday only at 8:15 AM!

Wednesday, May 7th, 2008 -

Weekly Discussion Class - 6:00 PM
Topic:  The West Virginia Democratic Presidential Primary Part 1

Special Guest - Rudi Shenk, Deputy State Director of the Obama Campaign

Our Wednesday evening discussion class returns this week twice as we've got two great evenings planned for you.  Rudi Shenk, Deputy State Director of the Obama campaign will be our guest and will field questions for Senator Obama, emphasizing issues that are important to Jewish voters.  We would like and are expecting a big crowd, so join us for the first of two special campaign evenings here at B'nai Jacob.

(Please note:  For the general election, we will try to bring representatives from both the Democrat  and Republican Party.)

Thursday, May 8th, 2008-

 Talmud at Ten -
Topic:
"Hillel vs.Shammai Round Two!"
(10:00 AM Capitol Roasters)

Join us this week at Talmud at Ten as we continue to witness the most celebrated rivalry in all of the Talmud: Hillel vs. Shammai!Their debates rocked and shaped Judaism as we know it today. Rabbi Akiva has now entered the fray and divorce is again the topic of discussion.  If you were with us last week, you know how heated it got .  Well, this week the heat goes up by a factor of 10 as the Talmud discusses how much "freedom" a husband should allow his wife.  Freedom?  Allow?  Oh boy! This will be one session women and men will definitely want to be a part of! I think I'd better make myself scarce!

Experience the magic of the Talmud every Thursday at 10 AM at Capitol Roasters (located on the corner of Quarrier and Summer in downtown Charleston).  Join your friends at Capitol Roasters   and be with us for Talmud at Ten.

Weekly Discussion Class - 7:00 PM
( Note: the minyan will be at 6:45 PM)
Topic:  The West Virginia Democratic Presidential Primary Part II

Immediate Past Chair and President, National Women’s Philanthropy, United Jewish Communities

Join us Thursday for another special campaign evening at B'nai Jacob.  Susie Stern, Immediate Past Chair of the Board, UJA Federation of New York and Immediate Past Chair and President, National Women’s Philanthropy, United Jewish Communities and a spokesperson for the Clinton campaign will be our guest and will answer questions for Senator Clinton, emphasizing issues that are important to Jewish voters.  Like Wednesday evening, we would like and are expecting a big crowd, so join us for the second of our two special campaign evenings here at B'nai Jacob.

Friday, May 9th, 2008 -

Late Friday Night Services at 6:00 PM

Join us as we resume our Late Friday Night Services this Friday (the Traditional Minyan will take place at 5:30 in the daily chapel).  This year marks the 60th anniversary of the creation of the world's only Jewish State.  What is it exactly that we are celebrating and why is it important for American Jews to mark this day?

Before Israel was 60, Israel was ten years old and exactly 50 years ago, Abba Eban, Israel's ambassador to the United States was interviewed by Mike Wallace of CBS.  What he said that evening on television was perhaps the most important statement on the significance of this day.  Join us this Friday as I talk about Abba Eban and what May 14th,1948 really means for Jews.

Saturday, May 10th, 2008 Special Kiddush Luncheon-

Yom Ha-Atzmanut  -

Join us as we celebrate Yom Ha-Atzmaut (Israel  Independence Day)!  Sixty years ago, the Jewish people returned to their ancestral homeland and re-established their connection to the promise land.  We are truly living the words of King David:  "When the L-rd brought the exiles back to Zion, we were like those who dream.  Our mouth was filled with laughter and our tongue with ringing song (Psalm 126)!" We invite you to join us for a very special Kiddush luncheon being given in honor of Yom Ha-Atzmaut (Israel Independence Day) by Drs. Gabriel & Ellen Szego.
