OUR SEVENTEENTH ANNUAL
CHARLESTON SUNDAY SCHOOL
“CANDLE DERBY" !!
The time to celebrate Chanukah has arrived and we have dusting off our menorahs and lighting our candles! Hooray!
The most important mitzvah on Chanukah is lighting the Menorah (sorry, gifts are not the most important thing!). We have discussed at Sunday school the way you light the menorah, and especially how long the candles should burn. You fulfill
the mitzvah even if the candles stay lit for a second but ideally, they should burn for at least a half an hour.
People do strange things to get their tiny candles to burn longer. Some put them in the freezer, some cut the wick short and some soak them in cold water. What works best? For the 17th year in a row, you are going to find out and bet on your answers.
Below, you will find 8 candles , their names, line, and odds. Names?! Yes, because we are going to have a horse...er...candle race. We are going to see which of our candles below will burn the longest. Each candle has a description as well as its handicap for the race. You are going to "bet" on which candles burns the longest on December 18th. The longer the odds, the harder it is for that candle to win (burn the longest).
What are you going to bet? Points, naturally! Entering this contest gets you 50,000 points of which you can bet as many or as few as you would like. You can bet on only one candle but remember, a long shot of 6 to 1 will pay off 300,000 points!
We must have this racing form before the race begins on December 18th and all entries will receive a surprise no matter how your candle performs. Good luck and hurry because the race is about to begin!
